What is light pollution?

Light pollution refers to the adverse effects of excessive light radiation (including visible light, ultraviolet light and infrared light, etc.) on human life and the natural environment. This pollution is mainly due to unreasonable lighting design, excessive use of lighting equipment, and lack of proper control measures.

Light pollution can be divided into the following categories:

White pollution: This pollution is mainly caused by the strong light emitted by incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, etc. If people look directly at this light source, they will feel uncomfortable, and prolonged exposure to such an environment may also cause vision loss. At the same time, these strong lights will also cause unnecessary lighting to the surrounding building and natural environment, affecting people’s rest and sleep.
Artificial daylight: This pollution mainly occurs in urban areas, because a large number of lighting equipment (such as street lamps, billboards, etc.) work continuously at night, making the city appear as if it were daylight. This will not only affect the quality of people’s sleep, but also interfere with the normal work and rest of organisms, causing damage to the ecosystem.
Color light pollution: This pollution mainly comes from a variety of color light sources, such as neon lights, advertising light boxes, etc. While these light sources are visually appealing, excessive use can adversely affect people’s mental and physical health. In addition, color light sources may also lead to light color pollution, that is, the color of the light is not coordinated with the surrounding environment, affecting people’s visual experience.
The harm caused by light pollution to human beings and the environment cannot be ignored. First of all, light pollution can cause damage to human vision and may even lead to blindness. Secondly, light pollution will also affect people’s sleep quality, resulting in insomnia, fatigue and other problems. In addition, light pollution will also cause damage to the ecosystem, interfere with the work and rest rules of organisms, affect the reproduction and survival of organisms.

Therefore, we should take effective measures to reduce light pollution. For example, reasonable lighting design, avoid excessive use of lighting equipment; Strengthen supervision and law enforcement to crack down on the illegal use of lights; Improve the public’s awareness and attention to light pollution, and encourage everyone to participate in light pollution control.
